"The town had a basketful of feelings good and bad about Joe's positions and possessions, but none had the temerity to challenge him. They bowed down to him rather, because he was all if these things, and then he was all of these things because the town bowed down."
Euphamism?: a lot of
Allusion:It's like the riddle, "which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
Hurston is possibly saying that people get caught up in things (stuck in a rut) to the point that they don't know which way is up, which way is down, where they are, how they got there, or how to get out.**sigh**
